Partner Dancing

with Sophie Cazeneuve

Partner dancing is a rich and revealing journey — one that invites personal growth, deep listening, and a greater understanding of how we relate to the world. Though it’s practiced with another person, Sophie believes the essence of partner dancing begins within: learning to connect to someone else by first connecting to yourself. It’s a moving exploration of trust, communication, and presence — skills that ripple far beyond the dance floor.

For Sophie, this practice has offered profound lessons about relationships. It has taught her how to listen more deeply, how to lead and follow with sensitivity, and how to meet others where they are. These lessons continue to shape the way she relates to people in all areas of life.

She has been teaching partner dancing in New York City for over 15 years, blending the refined structure of Ballroom with the creativity of social dances like West Coast Swing and Salsa. Her approach is rooted in organic movement and embodied awareness, helping students dance with more freedom, intention, and connection — to themselves and to others.

West Coast Swing at Big Apple Ballroom

Sophie is a delight to work with. She is a wonderful teacher and choreographer. We came to Sophie because we wanted to learn West Coast Swing, and we asked her to teach us the basic steps by creating a routine for us that incorporated them. We chose Reba McEntire’s “Why Haven’t I Heard from You” and Sophie got busy matching steps to music. As we learned the routine and our skills improved, Sophie was always supportive. After several months, she invited us to perform at various dance studios around Manhattan, and eventually to do a showcase at a big West Coast Swing competition in Newark. We have become totally addicted to West Coast Swing; in fact, we worry that we have forgotten how to ballroom dance! We will always be grateful to Sophie for making us love West Coast Swing.
